This residential subdivision was an infill project on a 2-acre site near the center of town .  The parcel, located in the designated Historic District of Los Gatos, CA, had been occupied by a single large house built at the turn of the century which had fallen into serious disrepair.  To bring the site up to its highest and best use, our assignment was to renovate the existing home and add eight new homes.  The City mandated that the new homes be compatible in size and style with the existing older homes in the neighborhood.  Our solution was to design three new unit types, ranging in size from 1,800 to 2,300 sq. ft., each with 2 different elevation types.  The new homes were placed around the existing dwelling to form a “village square” with box hedges and seating for the residents.  The landscaped square has proved to be very popular with both children and adults, providing a sense of community and a place to sit and chat with the neighbors.
