George Vernon Russell, FAIA
A few words about my father, George Vernon Russell FAIA, an award-winning architect who set design trends from the mid-1930s through the 1960s. He was published regularly in the top Architectural magazines of the day, starting with his work for Billy Wilkerson, founder of Ciro’s Restaurant in Hollywood and the Flamingo Hotal in Las Vegas. His is a legacy of inspired and creative design.
The following is an example of his work with his first partner, Douglas Honnold. The house was designed for the famous set designer Cedric Gibbons and his wife Dolores del Rio in the mid-1930’s. It was featured in the full-length motion picture “Twilight”, a noir thriller starring Susan Sarandon, Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, based on a novel by Richard Russo.

This house for John Jacob Pike, designed in the mid-1950s, won a National Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects. It typified his modernist design philosophy, which he carried through on many subsequent projects
