The concept for this new residence in the “Avenues” area of San Francisco was to place two square “pods”on the site, connected by an open stair atrium, so as to create a landscaped exterior entry court along one side of the building. The court provides a private , intimate entrance to the main living pod, which faces the ocean and the sunset. The ceiling of the Great room, which consists of Kitchen, Living and Dining areas, was raised to 14 feet in height, which resulted in two major benefits: more sunlight and views from that space, and a higher vantage point from the Master Bedroom situated directly above, which opens to an exterior deck. The front pod contains the 2-car garage at the ground level, and a separate studio/guest apartment above. The small rear yard, facing west, is landscaped in the Japanese tradition for quiet, contemplative outdoor moments. The stair atrium and selected exterior windows are glazed with Kalwall, a high-technology composite material which resembles shoji screens, continuing the theme throughout the house.
